  The RESULTS are IN!
We are reviewing the video tapes, but at first glance it appears the Cops beat the Firefighters in the 1st Annual Police vs. Fire Regional Rowboat Face-Off.
Both teams braved temperatures nearing 100 degrees, but still gave it their best. The McKenzie Cup was presented to Det. Frank McClain, PPD Rowing Recruiter. Although the Cops won't keep it long, they are proud to hold on to it for awhile.
A good time was had by all, with a crowd of over 200 watching the races and Brookline Fire Co. #35 coming all the way from Haverford, Delaware Cty. to race.
A special thanks to the PFD for their full support, Sgt. Greg Masi for knocking himself out during this very busy time for the PPD, Local 22 and FOP #5 for putting up the $1,000 wager, The Second Alarmers for taking care of the racers in this heat and the Independence Seaport Museum for providing the boats and hosting the event.
KYW 1060 Newsradio is running a great piece on the event all day, with NBC10 News and the Philadelphia Inquirer also on location. So far we've exceeded $3,200 in donations and counting.

THANK YOU!

The Boats

The Whitehall rowing boats that will be used in the POLICE Vs. FIRE Regional Rowboat Face-Off (pictured above, and based on a 19th century workboat design), are now under construction in the boat shop of the Independence Seaport Museum by students from Philadelphia’s own Charter High School for Architecture and Design (CHAD).

This is the pilot initiative in a program new and unique to Philadelphia, Independence Seaport Museum’s SAILOR (Science and Arts Innovative Learning On the River) program, which will utilize the hands-on process of boatbuilding to teach core science and math concepts as a fully-integrated portion of a partnering school’s curriculum.
The Museum will provide lesson plans to high school instructors that highlight the math, science, and history concepts that will serve as the basis of the workshop activities each week. Students would then apply these lessons at the Museum's Workshop on the Water two to three days per week.

The boats constructed by these students will serve as an educational tool for the Museum’s outreach programs, just as they are being used in the race in July.  Independence Seaport Museum is offering adolescents an unparalleled experience, while teaching key concepts and skills that will prepare them for their future. We believe we do not simply build boats, we build futures.

The Philadelphia Firefighter & Paramedic Union Local 22 IAFF conducts a year round program to benefit the Widows of our deceased members. The program is called the Local 22 Widows Fund, of the Local 22 Charitable Trust.

Local 22 represents over 4,000 active and retired firefighters and paramedics. Therefore we leave no one behind. That includes the spouses of our deceased members. Many of the widows are collecting as low as $250.00 pension per month, most are in the range of $350.00 to $600.00 depending on when and how long the spouse was a Local 22 member.

Every year the 2,000 active members and retired volunteers collect and donate to the fund. Last year the membership of Local 22 spent $98,259.00 on Thanksgiving Turkey Baskets, Christmas gifts and a luncheon. These gifts directly effect the well being and state of mind of the recipients during the holiday season, and financially assists the elderly who are trying to manage meager earnings in today's economy.

276 Philadelphia Police Officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Michael G. Lutz Lodge #5 - Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Survivor’s Fund was established not only to remember the sacrifice of each officer, but to acknowledge the sacrifice made by each of our surviving families.

Monies raised for the Survivor’s Fund enable the Michael G. Lutz Lodge #5 Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police to provide a luncheon for our surviving families during police week. There they are presented with a token of appreciation and given the opportunity to visit with and receive moral support from each other. The families are also given the opportunity to attend the Police Week Memorials in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, PA and Washington, DC. It is in this way that our surviving families are reassured that their loved one is still remembered by the citizens of Philadelphia.

Second Alarmers Associaton of Philadelphia

The Second Alarmers have served the Fire and Police membership, as well as hundreds of victims over the past eight decades.  They have been there at each and every multiple-alarm fire in Philadelphia since the service began in 1921.

Their objective then, as now, was to respond to all fires of two or more alarms (and extended-service 1-alarm fires) and to give aid at other disasters and Police and Fire services.
Members are called upon to not only provide a class “A” rest and rehab canteen, but also to provide lights, assist at first aid stations with manpower and equipment, and to be available when needed to answer a call – 24 hours, 365 days each year!

The organization is totally self-supporting through donations solicited mainly from the membership of the Philadelphia Fire & Police Departments.  In addition, private individuals can contribute to the Second Alarmers through the United Way Donor Option Plan (option #2125) and from the private sector we encourage both corporate and concerned citizens to help continue this fine tradition of service to our First responders by donating funds.  As with all charitable organizations, making ends meet is a major challenge.  Are you willing to help?  The Second Alarmers is an IRS Section “501 3 C” designated charitable organization.

The Police vs. Fire Regional Rowboat Face Off is honored to be supported by the Second Alarmers!
